JACK is grand central stations for the linux audio world. In a nutshell Jack is a sound server daemon that provides low latency connections between software applications. Jack is similar to ReWire. It transfers audio and midi data between audio applications. JACK works with ALSA (usb) and FFADO (FireWire) drivers on the backend. This means if you have an ALSA or FFADO compatible audio interface you will be able to use it with JACK (and therefore most audio applications.
